A great DVD player that won't cost you a bundle!!!!! Posted 12 March 2007
I love my Xbox 360 HD DVD Player and it didn't cost me a bundle to purchase it. I paid $199 on Amazon and received free shipping on the item. I watched King Kong on my new Samsung LCD 40" 1080 P and the picture was breathtaking. I wish Microsoft would have made the DVD player with an HDMI connection.
Good HD-DVD Player, but Can I Eject? Posted 08 March 2007
Easy setup and installation.
The only problem I have is that you can't eject the drive with the remote when a DVD is in. If the drive is empty, you have the option to open the tray. If a disc is in, the only option you are given is to "Play HD-DVD." You have to manually open it. (If you hit the "eject" button on the remote, the tray to your Xbox 360 opens, not the HD-DVD player.)
Other than that, it's a nice player with good quality.

Personally, I found it insulting that MS didn't include an HD-DVD player as standard with the X-box 360. This is supposed to be a nex-gen console, isn't it? If so, why is it using last gen media? You pay $400 for a gaming machine that MS doesn't seem intent on supporting for a long period of time. You have to buy a remote for DVD playback and you don't even have the future to look forward to. This device will not play games on an HD-DVD format, so you're stuck paying an extra $200 for a device that only plays movies! I can't wait for the games in 2 years that take 3 and 4 DVDs simply because MS wanted to rush a system to market. The games are going to out-grow the DVD storage media in no time, and X-360 owners are going to be stuck swapping out disks just to continue playing their games. For all of the grief Sony took for their PS3 pricing points, it's actually starting to look like a bargain. You get a next gen console, a next gen movie player, more available media options, and a 60gb hard drive for what you'd end up paying for the X-box 360 and the HD-DVD add-on. Plus PS3's game format is on Blu-ray disk (55gb storage capacity compared to DVD's 9gb or so) and Blu-Ray is likely to win the format war against HD-DVD due to the massive studio support BD currently enjoys. I just don't understand MS's business model on this one and I feel sorry for those that bought a 360 (myself among them). I guess if you really (and I mean REALLY) like first person shooters, these won't be problems. But for the bigger games like RPGs and the Grand Theft auto type games, Xbox 360 is going to end up being more a hassle than a pleasure to own.

Let me admit, when I heard about the new Dual Blu-ray/HD-DVD player, I was glad that the format war(from my perspective) would be over since I could purchase any HD movie and not be afraid that the format will tank and would have to rebuy the movie on the other format. But since I am an avid gamer, I had already purchased an Xbox 360 before that and was considering my options. I had already paid $400 for the 360, and another $200 would be $600 for the 360+hd dvd add on. And to play blu ray movies, $600 for the PS3. Now that is $1200, and the dual format blu-ray+hd dvd is $1200. I would think that one would take the Xbox 360+360 hd-dvd player+PS3 over the dual format player because you are getting more for your money. You get games, blu-ray and hd-dvds vs. blu-ray movies and hd-dvds WITHOUT the interactive menu features. That means on the dual format it will act like a dvd and to select scenes you will have to go back to the main menu. I am a true av fan and want the best from my technologies. With that said, I am a proud owner of a 360+360 hd-dvd and a PS3(60gb) and it is the greatest AV experience u will ever have. 'nuff said.
The Best HD Player on the Market Period! Posted 04 March 2007
I was shopping for an HD player and had purchased the Toshiba player a couple of months ago and paid over $500 for the player and it only plays at 1080i. I came across the xbox 360 HD Player last night for $199 while i was shopping for a different HD player which ALL were more, $500 for HD,
$799 for blue ray and $1,199 for dual hd/blue ray player.
I thought there is NO way the 360 hd player would be any better than my current player, WRONG as i found it to be the ONLY hd player to play at 1080p. I purchased the Vega xbox connection to hook up to my xbox and samsung 46" lcd 1080p tv and of course the player which came with King Kong, Remote and necessary connectors.
I was concerned about my wireless xbox connection as the player uses the USB connection on the xbox i previously used for my wireless connection, no problem as the player has a place for the wireless connection and works fine.
Hooking up everything is simple and im no electronics guru and took about 10 minutes. When i turned on the tv the picture was HORRIBLE...so i went to the xbox picture controls and changed the Monitor resolution to 1920x1080 as it was hooked to the VGA connector and this would give me 1080p. Instantly the picture was very crisp and sharp on the xbox live menu. I put the movie in and WOW WOW WOW i could not believe my eyes. The whole family and a friend watched the entire movie as we had not seen such a sharp picture.
My friend also has an HD player and as soon as the movie was over went up to the store and purchased the xbox hd player. Its really a no brainer for the price and is the ONLY hd player that allows 1080P while ALL the other HD players will only play at 1080i. My total cost at best buy was $250 which included the xbox VGA cables, however, the player is a real bargain because you get King Kong which is $30 seperately and the remote is $20+ if purchased seperately.
Even if you TV does not support VGA I tried the supplied HD component cables for comparision and it was very very good with no noticeable difference at standard viewing range. For the money its the best bargain on the market for an HD 1080p player I have found. If you have lots of $$$ go for the dual HD/Blue ray player but again is OVER $1,000.
