Our Editorial Review
Amazon.com Even urban babies will delight in getting down on the farm with the adorable animals on this interactive learning toy. There's plenty here to keep baby busy. He can push piano keys to hear notes or learn colors and numbers; tap, slide, or roll any of the farm animals to hear their sounds or songs; or turn the pages on the book to hear one of two favorite childhood melodies: Old MacDonald or Mary Had a Little Lamb. Buttons are large enough for even the youngest child to manipulate easily and baby will hone his fine motor skills (as well as his language development and visual awareness) while exploring. While some customer reviews express concern that the swinging pig is a pinching hazard for little fingers, it appears that this character has been raised higher to allow a safe amount of space underneath it. The volume control offers two sound levels but, even on the lower level, some parents might find the bombardment of different noises to be grating on their earsespecially when they hear Old MacDonald baa-ed by the sheep or quacked by the duck for the hundredth time. However, kids up to the preschool age enjoy the songs immensely, making this a long-lasting toy. To preserve the battery life, an automatic shut-off feature kicks in if the farm is left untouched for a few minutes. The Discovery Nursery Farm comes with two short-term "AA" batteries for immediate play out of the box. --Cristina Vaamonde

LOVE THIS TOY Posted 04 January 2007 This is one of the best toys I have bought for my daughter. We bought it 6 months ago and she is still interested in it. It has so many things to keep a babys interest.
Waste of money!!!! Posted 11 October 2006 We bought this for our son last Christmas and it was broken within 3 weeks!!! This is unacceptable for any toy, much less one I paid $20 for!! The page in the middle that switches modes just stopped working for no reason whatsoever. My son has NEVER broken a toy and we own many Fisher Price and LeapFrog toys. I tried to exchange it many many times and the store never got it back in stock. I tried to contact Vtech via email and had my email returned as undeliverable. It was a cute idea, especially how the song "voice" changes when you touch a different animal, but with the safety issue with the pig and how hard it is for little ones to move the sheep, it's just not worth it. We bought another Vtech toy last Christmas as well (Sing & Discover Piano) and it broke within 2 months. I will never buy another Vtech toy!! There are much better toys out there. Don't waste your money!!
Good toy, if you don't mind horribly off-key music Posted 24 April 2006 Our son received this toy for his first birthday. It has a lot of good features--teaches colors, numbers, farm animals and their sounds, several songs. But the music is AWFUL--the singer is off-key on every single song (either that, or they did a bad job of matching up the music to his voice). As someone who appreciates music, I cannot tolerate listening to this, especially since there are far better toys out there. Since our son already has 2 LeapFrog toys which teach the same concepts as this toy (the Learning Table, which has much better quality music, and the Fridge Farm), we will be exchanging the Vtech Discovery Nursery Farm for a different toy.
Not worth it Posted 12 April 2006 My husband and I bought this for our son for Christmas who was 8 months old at the time. We had never bought a Vtech toy before, but for Christmas we bought 3. Of the 3, 2 were broken within 2 months after Christmas. The first one broke 2 WEEKS after Christmas. I was PO'd because this is not a cheap toy. My son did nothing to break the toy. He has never broken a toy and he has dozens of Fisher Price toys and some Leapfrog. The page in the center that changes the modes stopped worked all of a sudden out of the blue. We tried exchanging it at Toys R' Us 4 times, and they never got any back in stock. I tried e-mailing Vtech customer service and my e-mail was returned saying the e-mail doesn't exist?!
Aside from all that, the issue with babies' hands and fingers getting wedged under the pig is ridiculous. It shouldn't have passed the safety checks. I wish I had realized this when I bought it, though I will admit my son never tried to stick his fingers in there. He only tapped the pig from the front to make it swing.
The voice isn't THAT bad. It didn't bother me at all, but that is because I expect the house to be full of noise with a toddler around. On a final note, my son did enjoy this toy very much for a month or two. Now, 4 months later, he doesn't even bother to look at it or kicks it away if I give it to him.
Save your money!!!
