My Recommended Age: 5 to 35 Posted 05 August 2008 The Tonka Lights & Sounds Police Car is a fantastically fun toy if purchased for the right age group. However, I think the recommended 3-7 age range is a little off.
For children under 5, I think this toy has the potential to be upsetting. First off, the sounds are very jarring. Sirens aside, the police man's voice is loud and aggressive. Play time for small children shouldn't strive to mimic reality to the extent that the little policeman is demanding that the suspect get out of his vehicle while calling in for air support with a frantic tone in his voice. I think a five year old can handle this a little better, but it still seems woefully inappropriate for children that don't habitually watch "Cops" each night at home. This toy most certainly will not make your child associate police officers with safety and security. Add to this two fragile doors that require just the right amount of force -- too little and the door doesn't open; too much and it can break off, and you have a toy that just seems wrong for small children.
On the flip side, this is a quality toy. It's pretty well constructed and looks reasonably accurate. The size scale will allow a wide variety of 3.75" action figures to take the car for a ride, from Star Wars and G.I. Joe to DC Infinite Heroes. However, strangely enough, the police man figure that comes with the car does not fit inside. He is too tall and must stick his head out the window in order to drive.
In short, this is not a toy for small children, but, for more mature kids, as well as adults like me that still play with toys, this is a very nice accessory to a wide variety of action figure toy lines. I would suggest finding this item in stores, pressing the sound buttons (they can be pressed when inside the package) and making an informed decision for yourself, based upon your child's maturity level. You may also want to purchase this item in person because some online vendors have been removing the policeman figure and (presumably) selling him separately.
3 year old birthday present Posted 18 May 2007 My son has the Lights and Sounds Fire Truck and loves it so I wanted to get the corresponding Police car. I was unsure if this would be a small police car or if it would match the Fire Engine. I was very pleased with the size, it is the perfect match for the ambulence and fire truck.
I was a little disappointed Posted 23 January 2007 I bought this vehicle for my grandsons and had it shipped directly to them. If I had seen it before they did I probably would not have given it to them. My daughter has since taken it away from them. One button that you press starts blinking lights, which are great, the children really like them. Press another button and a VERY loud male voice says something like "Get out of the car" There is no way that my daughter could find that can disconnect that voice. Not only is it too loud but it doesn't make a young child think policemen are very nice. Also, the back wheels have no traction so the car needs to be pushed along.
Hot Christmas Present Posted 10 January 2007 My son has a General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard and wanted a cop car to chase it. I searched and searched and finally found this. He was tickled that it lights up and makes sounds just like his General Lee. The doors open so his army guys chase cars.
