Mario Kart DS - Classic Gameplay with a fresh twist! Posted 14 March 2007 I have been a fan of the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart 64, and I must say Mario Kart DS does not disappoint! Mario Kart DS returns to the formula that made Mario Kart 64 and all other incarnations of the Mario Kart series so enjoyable while adding innovations of its own. Here are some pros of the game:
Pros -
+ Various Course Levels (32 in all) - Mario Kart DS reprises some levels from the previous Mario Kart installations, including favorites such as Frappe Snowland from MK64 and the famous Rainbow Road. There are also innovative new levels ranging from a airship fortress, a desert level (complete with the angry sun from Super Mario 3), and a haunted mansion. There are also various obstacles, such as piranha flowers, that try to foil your racing efforts.
+ Unlockable characters
+ Graphics - Graphics on this game are great! They are up to par with that of the N64, especially considering the size of the DS!
+ Mission Mode / Battle Mode - Mission mode is self explanatory, you are given simple missions to complete. Battle mode is like that of the N64, you battle against opponents in either two challenges (you have to either pop your opponents balloons or steal their shiny stars).
+ More items - There are more items to do battle with! And of course old favorites return..
+ Wireless / Multiplayer mode - One of the best parts of the previous Mario Karts was multiplayer mode. Now you can play wirelessly with other DS players, and you only need one game cartridge! And you can also play wirelessly with people from your region or from all over the world (all you need is a wireless router and broadband internet connection)! It's true portable innovation (sometimes I can't believe I'm playing with players from halfway around the world, amazing..)
Cons:
- Wish there were some more levels - This is the only con, and its not really a con, but just a petty complaint. 32 levels is good enough (it has double the courses of Mario Kart Double Dash, and has the same amount of levels as Mario Kart 64). However, I wish they would have reprised more N64 levels..
All in all, Mario Kart DS is highly recommended for the DS! Like all other Mario games, Mario Kart DS takes a classic game and keeps it fresh and most of all retains the fun. Make this one to own!
Mario Kart DS - A Racing Game for the Ages Posted 09 March 2007 First, I feel compelled to mention that I have never played the previous incarnations of this game. However, that being said, I also have to say that I generally hate racing games. The tracks are often too difficult, and the acceleration and steering impossible to control. Often racing games I try end up gathering dust on my book shelf.
Enter Mario Kart DS like a breath of fresh air. Not only do you have a selection of cars to choose from, but also a selection of racers. But it doesn't matter which one you pick, steering and acceleration for all of them is a dream. The only tricky functions you need worry about are the Left shoulder button for launching weapons, and the Right shoulder button for "drifting" (a controlled skid into a turn). The various styles of racetracks, in typical Mario fashion, range from the standard to the downright bizarre. All of them are fun, however. Even the ones that make you pull out your hair (like the Luigi's Mansion course).
Racing in the Grand Prix is where the main action is, but you can also race against the clock in Time Trial mode. There are Vs games which present you with a singular goal, and Mission mode gets more interesting (and more difficult) with each mission.
With Multi-Player functions that don't require extra carts, just another player (or three) with DS consoles, the replayability of this face paced yet fun filled, game is ensured.
Bottom line, if you have no other game for the Nintendo DS, get this one.
Mario Kart is AWESOME... Posted 08 March 2007 Bought this game for my oldest son. He likes the fact that you can link players together and basically share the game. I am 32 years old I and I even like taking his DS and playing a round myself every now and again...
awesome game Posted 03 March 2007 I love Mario Kart it is so fun.I had this on Nintendo 64 but I don't think my N64 works anymore, that is why I brought the DS. On this game you can do a grand prix,Time trail, vs, battle and missions. I like doing Grand Prix the best. You can also do missions where they give you certain tasks they are easy at first but get harder as the levels go up. This a great game for anybody you likes racing games.
Good Posted 25 February 2007 This game I haven't really played, but every time I play it over Nintendo Wi Fi I always come in 2nd place. It is fun with a mix of mission games and just plain racing, not like the GC version where there are no mission games. It is just mini games. I would say the GC version is better, but I still thought that this game was fun.
