Our Editorial Review
Product Description Fearsome bounty hunter Boba Fett is back, stalking the spaceways in his ship, the Slave I. The sophisticated anti-detection gear and stealth hardware make sure that his quarry never sees him coming until is too late. The Slave I can take on any foe with its bombs, blasters and launchers that really fire! Han Solo is trapped in carbonite and locked in the storage hold, but you can save him. Cockpit and wings rotate for flight and landing. Includes Boba Fett, Han Solo in carbonite, Bespin Guard, Dengar and IG-88. Includes 537 LEGO pieces.
Amazon.com Collectors will find this rendition of Boba Fett's ship from Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back to be the best one yet when compared to previous incarnations of Slave I. It's bigger than the original Lego model (7144), which was released in 2000, and its bricks have truer colors. In addition, this version has about 100 more pieces than the 2002 release (7153) and is offered at a lower price point, plus has a much sturdier chassis. Features of this Slave I include a rotating and self-leveling cockpit and foils, a trap door that opens up to drop space mines, a top hatch that opens and launches a large missile, two side cargo compartments that store and drop rockets, and a cargo rack door that opens to fit a stenciled brick of Han Solo frozen in carbonite (a favorite piece among collectors). Other minifigs in this set include Boba Fett, a Bespin guard (with African-American skin tone), and two new figures--bounty hunters, IG-88 and Dengar--who are not found in any other Lego sets. The 537-piece Slave I takes anywhere from three to five hours to build with some help from the illustrated instructions. The manual also contains a full inventory of all pieces with part numbers in case a piece is lost and builders need to order a replacement. --Cristina Vaamonde

Yeah! Lego Starwars! Posted 01 January 2008 This is one of my son's favorite Starwar lego sets he received for Christmas. He needed a little help from his Uncle to put together but once together it was one of the sturdier models that he has. This set is perfect for a 9 year old or older in my opinion. Not to big but not to small that one would become bored putting it together. It really is one worth the money, not one that can break apart easily during play.
Excellent product -- instructions fall short Posted 04 November 2007 I have helped my son assemble many of the Lego Star Wars series of toys. He had been asking for this particular model--the Slave I--for half a year. The trouble is, none of the local stores carry it. Even the local Lego store fails to keep it in stock, so I purchased it through Amazon.com.
It is a fun project, with a number of working parts. The model is complex, and this intricacy adds to the fun.
The main trouble, though, is the instructions. Unlike all the other Lego Star Wars models we have put together, this one does not list the parts needed at the top of each page. As a result, it is sometimes tricky to determine exactly which pieces are used in any given page. One has to examine the illustration on each page very carefully, to see which pieces are being added on that page. It is easy to miss added pieces, unless one flips back and forth between pages.
Great Toy! Posted 03 November 2007 Most Lego creations break at some point or another. With this one, when it comes apart, you don't have to start at the beginning to re-build it - you can usually just snap a piece back together. When put together, this set has actual working missile launchers. It also has a bomb launcher and two hidden guns. It comes with Boba Fett, two other bounty hunters, a Bespin guard, and Han Solo in Carbontine. The cockpit swivels when you rotate the ship body. That's cooler than having to twist a dial or something like I have to do on my X-Wing Fighter Lego set.
Slave F'ing One! Posted 22 September 2007 This lego was a blast to put together. Love the new bounty hunters the set comes with. All the little compartments on the slave one are sweet(missile rack, bombs, giant cannon, etc). Go out and buy this now!
One of the coolest Star Wars Lego sets in a long time. Posted 07 August 2007 I have been a Lego fan since I was a child. Adulthood took me away from the fun and enjoy of building Lego sets. However, it took these very collectible, yet fun to build, Star Wars Lego sets to bring me back. I have purchased many sets to add to my collection, but I decided to open and build the Slave I.
Quite simply, this is one of the best Lego sets you can buy, build and play with that I have seen in a long time. The instructions are detailed, and the set will take a few hours to build. When you are done, you will have one large Star Wars ship on your hands, and it will include all the details from Boba Fett's unique ship you remember from the movies.
First, Boba Fett's cockpit and wing panels are connected and rotate when you lift his ship. This makes him oriented in his seat in the correct direction, just like in the movie. There are also several moving parts, like doors to hold weapons, doors to hold what ever you want, doors to reveal missiles, guns that rotate, and a rocket launcher that can fire a missile (and it actually shoots a far distance). The nice thing about the missile system is how Lego hid the launch mechanism inside the structure. All you need to do is pull a black lever and the missile will fire. And that black lever is so well integrated into the Lego model, it looks like it is part of the ship.
You also get some Lego characters, including the man himself, Boba Fett, a frozen Han Solo, IG-88, a bounty hunter, Dengar, another bounty hunter, and a Bespin guard.
In terms of the build strength of this set, I found it to be very sturdy. The instructions make it clear what you are doing, and I had no problem with pieces coming apart from earlier steps. Boba Fett's ship is so well built and strong, when I dropped it only one wing panel came off. A word of advice: do not pick it up from the cockpit cover!
Overall, this set is very solid and well constructed. It is very detailed, and surprisingly, it is quite large when you get done building all 537 pieces. This set is well worth the price and will be a fan favorite for years to come.
