Amazon.com Review More often than not, when a game is in development for more than three years, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fi first-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound. The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known as the Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artifact--on the ring-shaped planet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power, and it's up to the player to stop them. In addition to several first-person-shooter levels, the game offers numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemy and allied artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will use the terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to cover and aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep, an ally will know to jump in and man the turret on the back of it. The graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per second rather than 60. The sound effects and voice acting are superb. The level design is among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging without being frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-in single-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes. Much like the outstanding GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, Halo raises the bar for console first-person shooters. All console action games will be measured against Halo for years to come. --Raymond M. Padilla Pros: - Outstanding game design
- High replay value
- Impressive AI
Cons: - Several maps are used multiple times
- Save functions could have been better implemented
- Graphics move at 30 frames per second, not 60
Amazon.com Product Description This action shooter takes place on a mysterious alien world. It offers a combination of team-based first-person-shooter gameplay (reminiscent of Tribes) and third-person vehicle combat elements. Gameplay kicks off with the player heading down to the planet's surface in a troop carrier, ā la Aliens. As the player and fellow marines exit, the remaining troopers form a flank in reaction to an oncoming onslaught of human and alien enemies. It's this smart AI system that makes for a noticeably unique gameplay feel. Another very nice feature is the seamless transition into vehicular elements. As you venture through mission objectives, a variety of enemy flyers and on-ground buggies are yours for the taking. Come across a vehicle and the camera will pull back to a third-person view as you strap in and motor through crossfire. A co-op mode allows a friend to join you in the single-player missions. For chaotic fighting action, up to four players can duel in split-screen deathmatch mode or link systems for LAN play. However you choose to hero your way through Halo: Combat Evolved, the action should break in your new Xbox in explosive style.

Halo's a bit overrated, but good nonetheless. Posted 08 March 2007 Don't get me wrong here. I love Halo as much as the next guy. It's very intense and does so many things right. However, it just doesn't strike me as being as slick as it could be. The frame rate is a little buggy here and there, the graphics aren't fantastic. The gameplay is where the game really shines, and it is great. The multiplayer in particular is amazing. Clearly this was made by many talented minds. However, the single player is good but not totally great. It mainly consists of one shooting section after the next, and it works very well, but I can't help but think that more variety along the lines of Perfect Dark would have helped. All in all, Halo is a very, very good game, though. Could use more polish in many places, but it's still good.
Halo inherits the throne Posted 27 February 2007 In the world of first person shooters, ID Software passes the baton to Bungi. The king is dead, love live the king. Arguably the greatest game ever made. It clearly beats out games like Doom3 and Half-Life2 simply due to replayability and multiplayer.
great fps, near perfect Posted 01 February 2007 There were some monotonous parts (the library) and has two control mechanisms I hated (crouching by constantly holding the joystick button down), and driving vehicles (should have been like GTA, it would be simpler), but otherwise I couldn't put it down! Especially worth it now that you can get it used for 10 bucks.
Halo review Posted 20 January 2007 As people have said for years, this is a great game and there isn't much to add to that. It is especially good considering its a 1st person shooter for a console. My only real complaint is that in multiplayer mode there are no bots. So you can't create a team of bots to fight with or against. Another minor complaint is that the Warthog (their version of a Hummer) is a bit sloppy to handle while driving, however, it is very forgiving which makes up for a lot of that.
A girl in a boy's world Posted 12 January 2007 Yep, I loved it, as pretty much everyone does. The only difference is that I'm a girl who loved it. It is a wonderfully produced game that can really be played by anyone who can operate an X-Box controller. I can only win on the lowest difficulty level, but I can muddle my way through the higher levels as well. Somehow killing aliens is different and much more soothing.
The graphics are amazing and there are lots of options for comtroller set up and character views. It allows every player to customize their controller, which is a big help for me because I prefer all inverted. You can have almost any arrangement of buttons you choose and I wish all my games had as many options as this one does. There is a great storyline going on and it is easy to follow although it isn't simple by any means.
Keeping the aliens from finding earth is only the beginning. Can you save the planet with your evolved combat skills? You'll get sore thumbs though because you'll want to keep playing until you finish the game.
My favorite part is the multiplayer options. My guy-friends and I can get together and play each other to the death. It's great fun and I hope everyone enjoys it, even girls like me. Buy Halo 2. It is just as worth it.
